Kai Shin Kai History and Information

Sensei Mike Smith organized the Kai Shi Kai as "Uyeshiba Style Aikido," in the 1960’s. Shortly thereafter the KSK became affiliated with the British Aikido Association (BAA) as a group practicing traditional Aikido autonomous to, but working closely with the Tomiki-Kai. The name was soon changed to Kai Shin Kai, which means "Open Heart, Open Mind," in recognition of the differences in Aikido as it practiced by different styles and the desire to encourage acceptance of these differences by students and instructors. The BAA is recognized by the Japan Aikido Association – which ratified Dan promotions within the KSK until 1994 when the KSK struck out on its own.

The KSK practices traditional Aikido in the manner of Hombu Dojo (Tokyo), where senior Shihan all have distinctive styles but nevertheless all follow the path of starting as a triangle, moving as a circle and finishing as a square (posture, movement and stability). That is, the KSK recognizes that there are many ways of expressing both basic and advanced Aikido, none being incorrect as long as the Aikido being meets these simple criteria. "Is what is being taught Aikido?" "Does it follow the basic tenants of traditional Aikido taught by O’Sensei?" and most importantly, "Does it work?"

In the years since it was founded the Kai Shin Kai has expanded through the development of students, and by accepting other independent instructors and Associations to join.

Kai Shin Kai America was established formally in May 1999.
