Aikido Techiques

TYPES OF TECHNIQUES
TACHI-WAZA Both tori and uke standing.
SUWARI-WAZA Both tori and uke sitting.
HANMIMANDACHI - WAZA Tori sitting and uke standing.
KANSETSU-WAZA Joint or pinning techniques.
NAGE-WAZA Throwing or Projection techniques.
ATEMI-WAZA Striking or hitting techniques.
JIYU-WAZA Free-style attack and defense with two or more attackers.
USHIROWAZA Techniques applied to attacks from the rear.
KAESHIWAZA Reversal techniques.

  BASIC POSTURES

AI-HANMI Tori and uke are in the same posture.
GYAKU-HANMI Tori and uke are in opposite postures.

KATATE-DOR 1 Wrist grip.
AI KATATE DORI Wrist grip in Ai-Hanmi.
GYAKU KATATE – DORI Wrist grip in Gyaku-Hanmi.
KATA-DORI Shoulder grip.
SODE-DORI Sleeve grip.
HIJI-DORI Elbow grip
MUNE-DORI Lapel gripped at the mid-chest.
RYO GYAKU -KATATE DORI Two hand gripping one wrist. (Also called "MOROTE DORI)
RYOTE Two hand attack. (Frequently abbreviated as RYO.)
RYO KATATE DORI Both wrists held.
RYO KATA DORI Both shoulders held.
USHIRO Attack from behind
USHIRO RYO - KATATE DORI Both hands gripped from behind
USHIRO RYO -KATA DORI Both shoulders gripped from behind.

STRIKING ATTACK FORMS

UCHI A swinging or sweeping blow.
SHOMEN UCHI Front downward swing.
YOKOMEN UCHI Swinging blow to side of the head.
TSUKI A jab, straight thrust or punch.
JODAN TSUKI A punch to the upper body or head.
CHUDAN TSUKI A punch to the mid body or stomach.
MUNE TSUKI A punch to the body's torso
GEDAN TSUKI A punch to the lower body or groin.
GERI A kick as in tsuki, either Jodan,   Chudan or Gedan.
UCHI GERI A sweeping kick.

DEFENSIVE TECHNIQUES

   KANSETSU WAZA or KATAME WAZA    ( Pinning Techniques)

IKKYO First technique. Rotating the elbow over the head.
NIKYO Second technique. Bend and twist the wrist toward the body.
SANKYO Third technique. Twisting the arm inside itself.
YONKYO Fourth technique. Nerve pinch or arm flick.
GOKYO Fifth technique. Rotating the elbow and shoulder down.
HIJISHIME Elbow crushing.
KOTE GAESHI Outward turning wrist pin.
SHIHONAGE Four direction/Shoulder wheel.
KATA KATAME Rotating the shoulder forward and down.
KATA GARAME Rotating the shoulder backward.

KO KYO NAGE (Breath Throws) or NAGE WAZA (Throwing Techniques)

IRIMI NAGE Entering body throw.
TENCHI NAGE Heaven and earth throw.
UCHI KAITEN NAGE Rotary throw initiated from the front.
SOTO KAITEN NAGE Rotary throw initiated from the side.
SUKUMEN Rotating the head backward from underneath.
KOSHI NAGE Over the hip throw.
AIKI OTOSHI Body drop.
SUMI OTOSHI Corner drop.
UDE GARAME NAGE Elbow lock throw.
JUJI GARAME Crossed elbow throw.
AIKI NAGE "Harmony" throw, or throwing an opponent with no  pre-control technique.
